RETURN OF THE MESSERSCHMITT

          This Messerschmitt KR 200
          “Kabinenroller” of the 32nd
          T.F.S. is caught on camera
while returning to Base Camp, af-
ter a quick inspection of the taxi-
track for FOD (Foreign Objects and
Debris) for instance. Usually this
was done by a more ‘normal’ U.S.-
Military Vehicle, so this was quite
a unique sight.

F-4E-39-MC 68-0412, just after landing on it’s way to Base Camp. At the end of the fuselage, underneath

the tail-fin, we can see the brake-chute door in the open position.     The brake-chutes were blown off on

the tarmac at the end of the runway.                                                                       Soesterberg, Friday July 31, 1970.

F-4E-44-MC 69-7558 was an F-4E from a new series. This aircraft and the ones that followed were standard

equipped with a modified nose gun.  The F-4E’s that were delivered earlier, went to Spain in 1971 to under-

go the same modification and by mid 1972 the work was finished.

In this picture we see ‘558’ being towed back to Base Camp, because of a mal-function.       In contrast with

the outdated F-102, this was seldom the case.

1974 Was a very busy year for the squadron. Not especially with sorties or missions, but it was decided that all F-4E’s in Europe had to

undergo new modifications again.  So Soesterberg Air Base became rather quiet that year, because the “Phantoms” had to go to Spain

again to receive leading edge slats (LES) for better manoeuvrability.    Finally, by the end of the year, all F-4E’s were operational again.

In this picture of F-4E-41-MC ‘68-0513’, the new leading edge slat is clearly visible.
